Artist Statement:

'From my walks in this world, I’ve found there are no boundaries to awe. It is a state of our own creation that we define with our expanse to see and feel. Awe can be felt on grand scales such as setting up camp beside soaring peaks deep in the forest. And oftentimes, awe can be felt in the surprising and seemingly small, everyday occurrences such as a flower petal, a patch of moss, a bird song, a reflection on water.

In ‘State of Awe’, I have worked from many years of snapshots and sketches rooted in my life experiences of awe felt across our Northwest landscape. These areas explored include the alpine ranges of The Selkirk Mountains, The North Cascades, The Cabinet Mountains and The Alpine Lakes Wilderness; the diverse and magical Shrub-steppe of the Columbia Basin and my Green Bluff backyard full of farming, flowers and morning wanders through the trees.

For my materials, I worked to mindfully make use of and repurpose as much as possible by using paint from past mural projects and wood that has been inherited from family. With each brushstroke, I hope to remember and share the awe that each of these moments inspired. Moments that softly asked me to slow down and look beyond myself. Moments that inspired curiosity, true attention and a desire to learn more about the beautiful workings of the ecosystems we are a part of. Moments that welcomed me home and comforted me with the resounding feeling that the state of awe is a place for everyone to return to.'
