Consumer Culture

Show Dates: August 4th - 26th

Opening Reception: August 4th, 5pm - 8pm

Join us for our August gallery show, ‘Consumer Culture,’ featuring work by local artist, Chance Lucy.

Show Description:

The exhibition titled ‘Consumer Culture’ features fifteen pieces varying from paintings, sculpture, and woodcuts. It centers on the brands and logos that we are all largely acquainted with in one way or another. The idea is that individually, we all have different conceptions and feelings about a specific company. It invites us to investigate. What are the implications and consequences of supporting these companies, and why do we feel so attached and connected to them. Using instantly recognizable logos and heightening them into visual works of art, it provokes the viewers perception of these brands. Exploring the possibility that these brands hijack our thoughts and spending habits, while also creating mass pollution in our world. This exhibition is important because the audience is faced with the idea that a simple symbol can hold so much power behind it. The hope is that viewers will leave with a deeper understanding of their relationships with companies and corporations, as well as more awareness of the world we live in today as consumers.

Artist Statement:

As an artist, my objective is for the viewer to be confronted with their own ideas and emotions based off of personal preconceived notions upon looking at a specific artwork. My work consists of a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, and wood work. By elevating the logos into a work of art, it forces conversation and reflection. As well as connecting people with the everyday logos we all see throughout our lives. With these pieces, I hope to get people thinking of the past and future of these companies, and to challenge the thought of why we buy from them. Possibly, it is because we align our own identities with one brand over another, or is it the logo that’s associated with the product?
